As the Celtics offseason goes on, there is still a lot of uncertainty. Fortunately, there is something to be happy about. Robert Williams went off this season. Once fellow center Daniel Theis got traded to Chicago, it was his time to shine. He improved in all facets of the game this season and it was on fully display when he became a full time starter. Improvement offensively, defensively, passing, and all-around effort were off the charts.
Effort and attitude were initial concerns with Williams when he was drafted in the first round from Texas A&M. He was a no show to his first call with the local media and was late getting to Boston. Hence the sarcastic nickname of Timelord he was donned. Williams didn’t play a lot as a rookie which posed more questions. Was his attitude becoming a problem? Were bad habits getting in his way? Things ramped up as time went on, and now he has solidified himself as a key component in Boston’s recipe for success.
Every great team needs a reliable big guy. Tristan Thompson certainly wasn’t it. Theis did well, but Williams has more dynamic ability as a playmaker. With his rookie contract almost up, the Celtics will probably want to sign him to a long-term deal ASAP. It’s hard to believe that we’re at the point when we pay have to discuss potential suitors for someone people didn’t think would last. You know what they say, time flies when you're having fun.
