More Than a Deep Threat

Piece by Anthony Del Trecco

AJ Brown has emerged as the top option for the Titans. Even with Julio Jones coming over, Brown will still get a lot of attention. For a while, the Titans have been run first and ask questions later while the passing game as become an afterthought. Brown was mainly used as a deep ball threat off the play action pass. While he excelled in that role, we know he can do more.

Julio is getting older and can’t handle all of the responsibilities of being a #1 receiver anymore. Brown will take the pressure off of him and Jones can still be a solid second option. Brown will draw double coverage now, and Julio will be left with a one on one situation with a teams second corner. That is still a favorable matchup even if he is more of a possession receiver now. Brown’s strength and physicality also make him a problem for a defense.

The Titans now have the ability to have a very good passing attack. This will certainly make Ryan Tannehill’s life a lot easier. On top of that, Henry does not have to get run into the ground anymore. Sorry fantasy football owners. The big question now will be can Brown handle the fulltime duties of a top target in the offense. Early indications show that should not be a problem. But it is the NFL, and sometimes you never know.

The good news is that he can run every route and do it well. As long he stays healthy, the Titans will have a special talent for many years to come.
